Encounter, synthesis, immersion and construction: information and the gaining of understanding

Bawden, D. (2015). Encounter, synthesis, immersion and construction: information and the gaining of understanding. Paper presented at the ncounter, synthesis, immersion and construction: information and the  gaining of understanding.

Abstract

This presentation considers the growth of understanding as an outcome and impact of the use of information. Initially, the nature of understanding will be briefly discussed. The kinds of information behaviour that lead to understanding, will then be examined, with a focus on browsing, information encountering, and various ‘creative’ information behaviours. Those aspects of information literacy which may be associated with understanding will be idenfied, particularly knowledge assembly and critical synthesis. The potential for immersive and participatory information environments in the near future will then be speculated on. Finally, David Deutsch’s idea of knowledge as a ‘constructor’ in physical theory, arguably the ultimate impact of information, will be mentioned, with some speculations on potential links between human understanding and information as a constituent of the physical world.
