Phase grating modulators utilizing XDP type crystals with interdigital electrode structures

Al-Salman, S. S. (1977). Phase grating modulators utilizing XDP type crystals with interdigital electrode structures. (Unpublished Doctoral thesis, The City University, London)

Abstract

This thesis deals with the use of the XDP type crystal, as the active crystal in the recently developed’ electro-optic phase grating diffraction modulators. This type of crystal has been widely used in the conventional longitudinal and transverse type modulator.

A novel technique of attaching the interdigital electrode structure on to a water soluble crystal has been developed.

The performance of two crystals of the XDP type, ADP and KD*P are investigated theoretically and experimentally.

The effect of the crystal orientation is also considered.
