Linear elastic stress analysis for a thick shell of revolution subjected to hydrostatic pressure
Mercer, L. C. (1981). Linear elastic stress analysis for a thick shell of revolution subjected to hydrostatic pressure. (Unpublished Doctoral thesis, The City University, London)
Abstract
The thesis is divided into two parts, theory and experiment.
Part One contains the theoretical analysis of the thick shell of revolution and is intended to be essentially practical in that the theories are developed for the sole purpose of producing numerical results which can be assessed in application.
Beginning with the finite element Displacement Method, some element types are gone into, and followed with computer programmes written in Fortran. A simple thin shell theory follows, first to assess a definition of a deep submergence shell, and then to set up equations for a particular geometry which can be used in comparison with the finite element method as a quick check that results obtained are of a simila order. Also a general method of plotting stresses in finite elements is carried out.
Part Two descrites the experimental work which was carried out in the University Structures Laboratories for incorporation within the thesis. Results are analysed and discussed in comparison with the results of the theoretical analysis.
