Volou, A. (2025). Introduction. In: International Protection of Socio-Economic Rights: An Interactional Approach. . Routledge. doi: 10.4324/9781003428206
Abstract
This chapter introduces the book, its aims and doctrinal and original contributions, sets out the scope and structure of the book and provides an overview of its chapters. This chapter also usefully sets the broader context of the book. It does so by providing a brief overview of the formal recognition, enforcement and practical observance of socio-economic rights to demonstrate the relevance and usefulness of the interaction of legal orders in this context. It shows that socio-economic rights are still treated as second-class rights, which is manifested in their limited formal constitutional recognition and limited justiciability at both the domestic and international levels. These are coupled with a lack of practical observance of socio-economic rights, which all render the interaction of legal orders a useful tool for advancing socio-economic rights.
