Abstract

Background: Haematology Advanced Nurse Practitioners (HANPs) play a vital role in delivering specialist care in cancer settings; however, their role remains under-defined, with limited research assessing stakeholder perceptions and satisfaction.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate stakeholder satisfaction with the HANP role among clinicians and patients in England and to develop and validate a scale assessing role domains.

Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 24 patients, 75 hospital nurses, and 19 medical practitioners. The questionnaire included demographic and treatment-related questions, and a 20-item HANP Role Satisfaction Scale assessing Personal Attributes, Professionalism, Role Clarity and Versatility, and Clinical Competency. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Principal Component Analysis to confirm construct validity.

Findings: Participants reported high satisfaction and positive experience with the HANP role, with a mean score of 4.6 (SD = 0.6; range 1–5) and a total sum of 92.4 (SD = 10.5; range 20–100). The HANP Role Satisfaction Scale demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.96). Lower scores in Role Clarity and Versatility suggest some ambiguity about the HANP role among stakeholders.

Conclusion: This study confirms strong stakeholder satisfaction with the HANP role while highlighting role clarity as an area for improvement. Enhancing role clarity, visibility within multidisciplinary teams, and organisational support is essential for optimizing HANP integration in specialist cancer care. The HANP Role Satisfaction Scale provides a reliable tool for assessing stakeholder perspectives, informing workforce development, and guiding future research on HANP role evaluation.
