Abstract

This thesis is the result of a continuing study into the analysis and design of prestressed concrete pressure vessels since 1958, (2), (3), (72), (111), (114), (116). *

Programmes of research and development on these vessels have been undertaken** both in industry and in university laboratories. The investigation described herein, concerning the end slabs of prestressed concrete cylinders has continued since 1966.

The work presented in this thesis can be summarized under five main headings.

One section of the text describes in detail the objectives, equipment and techniques of the experimental investigations.

In a further section, the literature is summarized dealing with the changes which occur with loading, time and temperature in the relevant concrete elastic constants. Changes in some of these constants have been the subject of part of the experimental work undertaken, and this is also reported.

Another section reviews and assesses the existing literature concerning the effects of loading, time and temperature on the creep and shrinkage characteristics of concrete. Experimental creep and shrinkage data obtained from tests on the concrete under review, are also presented elsewhere in the thesis.

In addition, a study is made of existing methods of elastic and time-dependent analysis, comparing and contrasting their usefulness, particularly in relation to the analytical objectives of the present investigation.
