Abstract

The term tack was defined and the concept of tack energy was discussed. A method of measuring tack energy was devised, the principle of which is based on the parallel plate theory of Stefan (1874). The method was used to study the variables involved in tack energy measurement using an adhesive composition which was compounded from poly (isobutyl vinyl ether).

The solvent used to prepare the adhesive strongly influences the tack energy of the dry adhesive composition.

The results showed that tack energy is strongly time and temperature dependant and additionally the nature of the substrate surface had a direct influence on the observed tack energy.

A procedure was devised which reduced the number of variables involved in tack energy measurement, including surface effects, to ‘a single common variable. This variable was the logarithm of the ‘speed of testing. The relationship of this variable to the rate of testing was discussed and for viscoelastic materials the procedure has been widely used in adhesive science to superimpose time and temperature effects.

A theoretical justification for treating surface energy effects in this way was derived, based on free volume and activation energy considerations in the bulk and surface phases respectively.
