The role of the human micro-environment in heat transfer and particle transport

Clark, R. P. (1973). The role of the human micro-environment in heat transfer and particle transport. (Unpublished Doctoral thesis, The City University)

Abstract

The convective boundary layer flow over the human body that forms part of the human micro-environment has been investigated.

This flow has been visualised over the whole body surface using a schlieren optical system. Techniques are described for measuring the velocity and temperature profiles within the convective flow over models designed to simulate the boundary layer over the human body.

The human body has been considered as a series of heated cylinders and convective boundary layer theory has been used to determine the flow profiles and the heat output from these cylinders. These results have been shown to agree with the measured profiles and with the heat transfer data obtained by physiological methods. The way in which clothing modifies the convective flow patterns and the heat transfer is discussed.

The proposition that the human convective flow may transport particles from one site to another has been investigated using tracer particles in the flow of heated models and in a small laminar flow wind tunnel. The convective boundary layer has been shown to be a powerful mechanism for the dispersal of particles from the body.

Some air sampling techniques are described and the results of the sizing and identification of particles from various environments with special reference to the recovery of particles of skin shed from the body surface are reported.

The development of an electronic particle sampling device based on a hot wire anemometer probe is described.

The bellows action of garments in displacing air from non-occluded openings has been visualised. This effect is discussed in relation to the way in which garments used in operating theatres may enhance the dispersal of skin particles to contaminate the surrounding air.
