What are Chemsex abstainees’ reflections on Chemsex and Sober sex in recovery?
Cartner, C. (2023). What are Chemsex abstainees’ reflections on Chemsex and Sober sex in recovery?. (Unpublished Doctoral thesis, City, University of London)
Abstract
Current research into Chemsex views the phenomenon through a post-positivistic and epidemiological lens, largely exploring factors related to one’s likelihood of engaging with Chemsex in the first place. Seldom has research been done exploring the experience of these men’s lives through other epistemological positions, nor has research been conducted exploring their experiences of sex following abstinence from Chemsex. This research looks at filling these holes in the literature, exploring the question “What are Chemsex abstainees’ reflections on Chemsex and Sober sex in recovery?” through interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). In this study, 9 men from the United Kingdom (UK) were recruited and interviewed about their experiences of sex following abstinence from Chemsex. The men were interviewed via Zoom with the meetings being recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed in line in IPA. Emergent themes and discussion for the clinical impact of these findings are discussed.
