Abstract

This study’s central focus is based on the concepts of synthesis and interpretation. My synthesis incorporates a range of perspectives from the fields of philosophy, analysis, and performance. My interpretation conceptualises and realises these in the forms of aggregate but continually evolving critical thinking and performance of the case-study piece Après une Lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata by Franz Liszt. Therefore, my main objective is the proposition of an inclusive and pragmatic research framework, which is carried out dynamically and proactively, promoting ideas for transformation and realisation, and which tries to find points of contact between certain oppositional stances and materials, thus being largely in unison with the widely recognised Hegelian notion of the process of Becoming. In doing so, I expect that this investigation can be of both theoretical and practical value, contributing not only to purely musical matters, but also to a broader ideological and intellectual understanding of key – and possibly dialectical – issues pertaining to the hybrid generic nature of the specific piece, to the dual role of its creator as an improviser and a composer of its music, and to certain contentious positions concerning musical score and musical performance. Such an aim calls for both processual thinking on intrinsically musical and extrinsically cultural levels and an interdisciplinary approach, which have been growing in merit and influence over the past two decades, not least through the works of Janet Schmalfeldt, John Rink, and Nicholas Cook amongst others.
