Digitisation of NPP I&C Systems via Wireless Technologies

Yates, D., Bishop, P. ORCID: 0000-0003-3307-5159, Fletcher, G. , Guerra, S. & Di Buono, A. Digitisation of NPP I&C Systems via Wireless Technologies. Paper presented at the Nuclear Plant Instrumentation and Control & Human-Machine Interface Technology, 15-18 Jun 2025, Chicago, US.

Abstract

This paper presents a study aimed at evaluating the integration of wireless technology in Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems within NPPs. It summarises a comprehensive literature review of the current constraints for using wireless technology in I&C systems within NPPs in different regulatory regimes, identifying areas that would need to be addressed to enable the introduction of wireless technology in nuclear applications. This included an evaluation of current research into emerging wireless technologies and their potential for deployment in the nuclear industry, and an investigation of the impact that research and technological advancements have had on regulatory frameworks.

With a focus on WirelessHART, this paper also presents the results of a security-informed hazard analysis of a wireless test bed. The hazard analysis included a workshop taking a sandboxing approach in which potential security concerns and operational challenges were addressed. This provided a collaborative platform where the UK nuclear regulator and industry stakeholders could engage in a non-regulatory environment to explore how innovative proposals for the utilisation of wireless technology in I&C systems can progress to deployment.

This paper aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on the safe and effective integration of wireless technology in nuclear I&C systems, offering insights and recommendations for future regulatory and technological developments.
