Abstract

Archiving research data has many benefits, including creating new opportunities for reuse, preserving the data for prosperity, and maximizing the value of the data, particularly when collected from hard-to-access populations. Yet many researchers are hesitant or unsure about what archiving means for them or how to go about it. This guide will help qualitative social researchers to recontextualize and reanalyze the original findings of an archived study, potentially leading to new insights, advancing findings, and stimulating new research ideas. It will highlight the value of archiving qualitative research data and how researchers can design and data manage their own research study so that it is archive ready. The guide will address some of the common concerns researchers have about depositing their data in an archive. Finally, the guide offers advice on the practical process of preparing qualitative research data for an archive or repository.
