Abstract

This work is concerned with the elastic instability of tall and slender structures. It is now well known that the elastic primary analysis does not always predict accurately the distribution of stresses and deformation in structures generally and this may be a source of serious error in the design. While it is not possible to check the actual stresses in structures, the appearance of cracks and excessive deformation as well as vibration are visual indications of the discrepancy between the predicted and actual response of structures generally and particularly of tall slender frames. In this work, efforts are made to formulate and to include in the matrix other effects, which are often termed as "secondary" and to examine their effect on the response of tall frames and shear walls. Many of these effects result in the non-linear analysis. Particular attention is paid to the matrix formulation of theories in a form suitable for practical application in office conditions. Several experiments are made to check the validity of the assumptions.
