Abstract
The local free and forced convection heat loss from the human body has been investigated.
The convective heat loss from a cylindrical model of the human form in the standing and supine posture has been evaluated using boundary layer theory.
local convective heat loss from a heated body. It is shown that this instrument can measure the heat loss from a heated cylinder in free and forced convection to within 10% of other known data.
The calorimeter is small (12 x 8 x 0.20 mm?) and causes no discomfort when attached to a human subject, and does not inhibit movement.
The local convection heat loss from the leg and head of a human subject in free and forced convection has been measured. From these measurements it is shown that:- (a) the overall convective heat loss for these regions may be evaluated; (b) the heat transfer pattern around these areas is similar to the thermal boundary layer that exists around heated cylinders; (c) it is important to consider the local radius of curvature of the leg and head when measuring convection heat loss.
The calorimeter has been used in the following three fields of study:-
(1) Measurements have been taken in Helium and Nitrogen rich environments and the results show that about twice as much heat is lost by convection from the hand of a subject immersed in a Helium filled chamber compared to Nitrogen filled one.
(2) Measurements that have been taken from the thigh of an athlete running on a treadmill in a wind shows that more heat is lost from the thigh than can be accounted for by simply considering the thigh stationary in a winds; the reason for this difference is discussed in relation to the changes in the effective wind velocity due to the movement of the thighs.
(3) The heat loss through clothing assemblies from cylinders and a human subject have been measured, It is shown that the calorimeter may be used to evaluate the insulation value of a garment.
