Abstract

Since its beginnings in the late 1990s, the field of Music Information Retrieval (MIR) has led to technological and cultural impacts that set the stage for the more recent burgeoning of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies for music. Together, MIR and AI have reached ever-wider networks of listeners, users, developers, and marketers through applications like recommendation systems automatic genre classification. In contrast, how can musicians use similar technologies creatively while subverting and expanding their possibilities? This chapter introduces a group of composers and sound artists working in the period around 2008-2018 to exploit new resources for artistic creation offered by MIR. Unlike commercial MIR, their work resists the reification of genre categories by playing with, participating in, and forging novel micro-genres. Yet as MIR has permeated creation, it has demanded reassessments of definitions of creativity itself, offering perspectives that could also apply to more recent artistic creation with AI.
