Abstract

Underground networks (i.e., tunnels and shafts) are connected by short drives known as junctions. The construction of a lateral opening at a junction is referred to as a shaft breakout. The design of a shaft breakout can be complex, often resulting in the adoption of conservative design practices. The application of reinforcement around the opening is common practice to ensure that the additional loading can be safely resisted. This paper presents results obtained from geotechnical centrifuge modelling of a simulated shaft breakout. The model shaft consists of an aluminium tube with a diameter of 101.6 mm and a depth of 254.0 mm, founded in a sample of overconsolidated Speswhite kaolin clay.
