Abstract
Accurate performance predictions are vital for selection and design of efficient screw compressors and their systems. During screw compressor developments, reliable performance data can considerably minimise the costly and time consuming testing of physical prototypes. Software packages for screw compressors may include various performance prediction methods in order to allow both, selection of compressors for a particular application and performance prediction in the design of a new machine. A study was carried out at Howden Compressors Limited with the aim of investigating different performance prediction methods for their new generation screw compressor selection software. This paper aims to provide an overview of the methods currently employed for predicting the performance of screw compressors. These include empirical, analytical and numerical methods which are used in product development, selection software as well as in the design of screw compressor systems for refrigeration and natural gas applications.
