Abstract
The subject of a sense of language barriers between art fields emerges frequently in discussions about cross-disciplinary collaborations, a sign that there is a desire to seek a deeper understanding between the disciplines and their methods. The main aim of this research is to explore links between artistic practices and to develop collaborative methods that allow different disciplines to feel attuned to one another through the creative process.
Through practice-based research, the thesis and the accompanying portfolio explore collaborative creativity within artistic practices by asking, ‘how might diverse art disciplines move towards a sharing of languages?’ and ‘what kind of approaches to collaboration might encourage a sense of connectedness between the various contributors to an artwork?’ The idea of sharing languages means to consider various modes of communicating which is as much about noticing what the various voices have in common, as being conscious of noticing what each voice has to offer. The aim is to highlight considerations for understanding, relating, and relating to different approaches within collaborations by working with methods that encourage individuals to adopt a fluid mode of thinking that should not be constrained to a specific discipline nor avoid a disciplinary mode of thinking.
These ideas will be examined in relation to various collaborative projects centred around three living sound sculptures. The living sound sculptures create a space of creative openness in which artists can explore the process of making things together in the space and making room for their voices to coexist within the artworks. The sculptures are actively designed to elicit a continuous dialogue, thereby enriching the collective practice. They do not represent a specific end product but rather something that takes on a life of its own and creates a space to explore the improvisational creativity of a world that is always in the making. By thinking in terms of connectedness, the collaborative practice adopts a way of thinking with others and growing together through understanding the multiplicity of voices and their entanglements.
