Abstract
This paper aims to introduce and describe the concept of the pilot observatory, which is primarily based on the research findings from the WP2 series of reports. By organizing and coding interviews and assets into a relational database, a unique and dynamic resource has been created. This resource not only serves as a repository for the findings but also allows for further exploration and communication of the data. The focus is on facilitating understanding and communication, highlighting various typologies of networks, the organization of functions and industries, and the relationships among these elements from a Global Production Network (GPN) perspective.
The objective is to establish a foundational structure and representation of the Cultural and Creative Sectors (CCS) that can be expanded upon. The observatory is envisioned as a pivotal component of a broader platform and user network. The design aims to cater to a diverse range of stakeholders, ensuring accessibility for both casual viewers and expert analysts. While the detailed analysis of the underlying findings is covered in the WP2 reports, this pilot observatory is dedicated to showcasing the impact of a GPN perspective and its relevance to policy-making, as discussed in WP6. The observatory is viewed as a tool for translating data into meaningful information for effective CCS governance, recognizing that data's utility is intricately linked to its purpose and users. The paper is structured into four sections, providing an introduction to the observatory's objectives, detailing its design, demonstrating the query and interrogation capabilities, and concluding with a vision for a future observatory beyond this pilot phase.
