Multiculturalism as a Promoter of Cultural Homogenisation? Reinterpreting the Case of Itaewon, Seoul, South Korea

Song, I. ORCID: 0000-0002-1240-709X (2024). Multiculturalism as a Promoter of Cultural Homogenisation? Reinterpreting the Case of Itaewon, Seoul, South Korea. In: AMPS Proceedings Series. Local Cultures Global Spaces, 5-7 Dec 2023, Online.

Abstract

This study reinterprets Itaewon, Seoul’s iconic multicultural district, as a site of cultural homogenisation shaped by South Korea’s normative approach to diversity. Introducing the concept of Damunhwa Ideology, the paper critiques how migrants and foreigners are rendered as consumable ‘others’ rather than integral cultural agents. Using critical discourse analysis of newspaper editorials (1990–2021) and 28 interviews with residents and visitors, the research uncovers how this ideology is reinforced through media and everyday practices. Itaewon emerges not as a space of genuine multiculturalism, but as a symbol where material diversity masks the marginalisation of migrant communities.
