Abstract
In this chapter, you will learn how to reflect upon your own interviewing practice and how your personal biography can affect the interview relationship. We consider the concept of impression management and how we act in certain encounters can affect how people think about us – and in turn how this can affect the kind of data collected in an interview. We ask you to consider the different combinations of interviewers and interviewees and what difference it might make to the stories that are told.
By the end of this chapter, we hope you will have learnt how to tackle assumptions and reserve judgments that you might make about your participants. You will consider how body language can influence the relationship that is developed with your respondent, and how the partialness of body language (for instance through telephone or online interviews) can create new challenges. This ability to reflect on your own positioning in the research encounter, and to also develop a sense of empathy by putting yourself in the position of your participant, will lead to more attuned interviewing skills. Accessing a person’s story should be approached with care and sensitivity, and in this chapter, we will emphasize the importance of trust and rapport for gathering rich data. This chapter will also look at how we interview on sensitive topics and how to manage those encounters.
