Abstract

Clinical academic careers and research roles have been present in medicine and to a lesser extent in nursing for some time. Following a career as an AHP clinical academic is not a well-worn path and it can be difficult to know how to start or where to find role models. AHPs interested in academics have often forged their own paths, with each journey being unique. You may have various questions… What is it like? How do I get started? How can I support them as a manager/colleague? This session will include three early career Clinical Academics who are currently completing funded PhD studies. They represent two professions (OT & SLT), different clinical services (acute and community), the life span (babies, pre-school to adults), clinical specialisms (voice, dysphagia, complex needs). They have different funders and employers, are doing research in different parts of North-East London and had very different routes into their PhD. They will share their motivation for this route, the journey so far, their aims for the future and will have plenty of time to answer questions about this career route, including potential opportunities to become more active in their research or signposting for further support.
