Abstract

The context of this paper is a series of studies, based on constructivist practice, designed to reduce prejudice towards “different others”. This review of these studies makes recommendations for educational programs to promote harmony between individuals with different perspectives. Two constructions seem to have central importance. First, the problematics surrounding the development of self esteem and identity has a role in the construction of prejudice. Second, we recommend workshops for teachers using these techniques to develop an awareness and appreciation of the central constructivist notion of “realities” which cater for tolerance of difference, and an ethic of mutual respect.
